First Day of Classes

Yesterday was the first day back to school after a two week holiday for the University. I went to St Marys in the morning to check in with the secretary and set up a meeting with Dr. Holmes, the head of teaching in the divinity school. I also was able to get a list of the honours-level modules and seminars so that I can choose which classes I will attend in the next few weeks. [Click entry title to read more]

After popping into the library to get a few new books and stopping by admissions to drop off some random mail that had been delivered to our flat I went over to St Salvators to go to a class entitled, Jesus and the Gospels. As I was walking toward St Salvator's quad I couldn't help but notice how the feeling of the campus has changed with all of the students back. There is an energy and vibrancy to it that is infectious.

I got to the lecture early enough to introduce myself to the professor, Grant Macaskill, a young guy who was very welcoming and easy to talk with. The topic of the lecture was an introduction to the gospel of John, focusing on specific questions concerning its authorship, its 'Jewishness', its relationship to Gnosticism and the synoptic gospels, and its supposed anti-semitism. Since it is only a 100 level course, I found the lecture to be interesting but not especially challenging. I am looking forward to attending some of the upper level seminars later this week.

After the lecture I came home and Sharon and I ran to the store together to buy some groceries, since we had invited some new friends over for dinner last night. I did some reading after we got back (I am reading in the area of hermeneutics right now- very interesting, but dense) and then took a short nap in the late afternoon. At 5 I jogged down to the Sports Centre, which is about a mile and a half away from our flat and met up with the University of St Andrews cross country club for a training session. I am decent shape, but I think I happened to come on a particularly challenging day (judging by the comments of the regular club members)and I was hard-pressed to keep up. The coaches had us jog down the the west sands and run a series of sprint repeats. Then they had us run two repetitions of mile-long hard runs up and down the dunes the form a long undulating barrier between the beach and the old course. Anyone who has tried to run up and down steep hills of loose sand will know how difficult and tiring it is. We ran two mile long repeats along the dunes and by the end of the second one most people were hardly able to move faster than a walk up and down the slopes. I am definitely feeling sore today! The club meets four times a week, and I plan to make it a regular habit of joining them when I can.

Last night we had some new friends, Will and Vanessa, over for dinner. We met them at church a few weeks ago and they are both great. Will is an MLitt student at the divinity school, so we have plenty to talk about. Sharon prepared peanut chicken kabobs, rice, and corn and we all huddled around our little round coffee table in the living room chatting and enjoying getting to know one another.

I am looking forward to today. I have a meeting with Dr. Holmes at 11, and then I am planning to attend at least one class later in the day. I'd like to get some more reading done as well and also work a bit on some Greek translation to prepare for a seminar later in the week. Sharon is plugging away at her dissertation reseach each day. We are both still in awe that we are here and get the opportunity to do this! We appreciate your prayers and, as always, would love to hear from any of you.

Things seem to be pretty fun so far over there in Scottland. ^^ I thought the street sign was halarious! Its glad that you and Sharon are doing well and arent struggling or anything it seems. It really is a great opportunity. Well, Mr. Zeigler's doing a great job over here and is great to talk to one on one. Very interesting person. Anyway, Im probably going to be hired very soon at Smokey Bones as a hostess. My last interview is today so I'm praying they will still like/want me to join. I've also taken up Karate like I've been wanting to do for a while and I absolutely LOVE it! My teacher is wonderful and said he would be able to set me up with a host in Japan where i could stay for free. XD So everythings great here! I'll be praying for you as you continue your classes and for Sharon on her paper.

You are so geeky! It makes me smile! Still jealous that I have to go to boring old high school:) (One of these days I can study abroad*sigh*) You are doing a great job with the whole blogging thing. It's really great to hear from you, it's almost like you are still here. Class at GCCS is going great, trying to fight off senioritis, but Mr. Zeigler is doing a great job. You left some aweful big shoes to fill, but he's doing just fine. Well, hope to hear more later!
In Him,
Natalie
