Sorry it has been so long since I last blogged. Sharon's parents have been here the last few days and we have been on a whirlwind tour of the southern part of Scotland, which has left me little time to update this site. Also, we haven't had internet access for three days, so that complicated things a bit.

Sharon's parents arrived in St Andrews Friday afternoon and stayed overnight in our little flat. Saturday was a big day in St Andrews: The Kate Kennedy Procession. It is one of those quirky traditions that develops over hundreds of years that involves students dressing up like prominent historical figures associated with the school and parading down the main streets of the town. It is quite a spectacle! Check out the pictures and you'll see what I mean. Sharon and I were invited to a Kate Kennedy tea at the divinity school, but after making a quick appearance we decided to get back to our flat so that we could pack for our trip across Scotland with Sharon's folks.
We left midday Sunday and didn't arrive at the condo Sharon's parents had rented until the evening (after getting turned around a few times). The condo was in a little town called Turnberry (famous for its world class golf course) right on the west coast of Scotland. We could see the tip of Ireland to the south on a clear day as well as several other dramatic islands jutting out of the ocean just to our west. It was a perfect place to explore the area, which is littered with dozens of castle ruins. I think we visited nearly 15 in the last four days! Check out the pictures, as well as the links I have provided on my 'Book List' to get a better idea of exactly where we went.
We just got back here to St Andrews about two hours ago. I feel a bit overfull from eating a large plate of haggis, neeps, and mash (a local favorite) and am glad to be able to get on the internet again. I'll post more later, but I want to work on editing pictures first. Bye for now...
How are the books? Which one is your most favorite so far?
P.S. I really wish I could do what you are doing and not do schoolwork. You guys seem to have so much fun.
Hey Mr. Estes!
our class talked to Mrs. White about getting you to be at graduation through a satellite feed, but maybe if you just have a webcam it'll work that way! Anyway, we want you there and we're fighting for it! haha
I'm still jealous of your adventures... castles in Scotland!!!! man... haha
Grace to you,
Sarah M
Sarah,
Thanks for thinking to include me in the graduation ceremony. It means a lot to me.
I emailed Mrs. White and told her I would LOVE to be a part of it. I think I will try to make a video to show rather than doing a live feed via satellite (which might be technically difficult).
Tell everyone I say 'Hi'!
Nikita,
You asked about my favorite book so far. Favorites are always tough to determine, but I think I would recommend 'Sophie's World' for you to read. It is at the same time a mystery novel and a condensed (but highly informative and very lucid) history of philosophy. Jordan C. took a crack at it before I left (I'm not sure if he finished it or not). I have to admit that at times the dialogue is a bit forced and the narrative bogs down in spots because of the philosophical explanations, but I think you would get a lot out of it. If I taught an introductory course on Philosophy (not that I am qualified to do so) I would use it as the primary text.
Mr. Estes:
It seems that you have already accomplished many of the goals you originally set out to do (i.e: excercise, spiritual growth). I was wondering, did you get any chance to work on materials for your classes, such as a Teacher's Version for our OT & NT Survey class? I'm guessing that you already have some ideas for the Christian Imagination course.
Right now I am reading several OT and NT Survey textbooks which I will use to refine the curriculum I have already put together. Then I will work on typing up the notes. Most of that is formatting, though, since the bulk of what I will type up in the teacher version of the class notes is already on the PowerPoint presentations. So, really, I am focusing more on the content right now and then I will brush up the actual materials in a few weeks.
