A Beautiful Day
Today Sharon and I woke up to a perfectly clear day. The town glistened and everyone seemed to be out enjoying the sunshine. After breakfast Sharon and I walked down a small road that hugs the coastline to the admissions building where we met my contact for the fellowship, Gill. She welcomed us to the program and issued us our official University of St Andrews staff ID badges so that we can access the library and other resources. From there Sharon and I explored the town for a bit... [Click on the entry title to keep reading. The rest of the entry appears in the first comment.]

...stopping in at several second-hand charity shops that sell everything from designer clothes (donated by the wealthy students who attend the university) to vinyl records. We prepared a quick lunch back at our flat and then I ventured out on my own to take pictures and find a bench in some sunny and picturesque place where I could read. I wandered by the ruins of the medieval cathedral and through the town, ending up near the old course and the west sands beach where I took up a book and read for a good long time. I'm reading Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder, which I've actually read before but which is a fantastic refresher on the history of philosophy. I've also decided to try to read a book of the Bible each day while I'm here. Today I read 1 Samuel. It has been a while since I've read that book closely and noticed how bipolar Saul is. I also noticed several possible anachronisms in the book that I want to investigate further (e.g. Hannah's mention of king in 2:10 before the kingship was established in chapters 8-9, David taking Goliath's head to Jerusalem in 17:54 before the city was captured in 2 Sam. 5, etc.). I would also like to explore further when the term "Messiah" came to refer to more than just a human king (literally, anointed one) and began to have overtones of universal redemption from sin. Furthermore, the references about God sending Saul an "evil spirit" are troubling and the location of high places, priests, altars and generally the cultic activities of the Israelites still seem to me to violate Deuteronomy 12. Anyway, these are just some of the issues I want to explore in the coming days. It is fun to have the time to do so and the resources of the University at my disposal. Tonight Sharon and I have had a quiet night. I went for a jog in the opposite direction as yesterday along the Fife coastal path, which offers some wonderful views over the ocean and back toward the town. I will have to hike it at sunrise sometime and take pictures so that you can all see how beautiful it is. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow. For now, I'm going to read a bit more and then sleep.
This is Emily. We miss you at school and have had a hard time getting to you blog. I am glad that you are having fun. The school newspaper is writing a story about you for the next edition. If you can email Miss Wheeler with some more specifics that would be nice. Anyways have fun and learn. We cannot wait to hear about your latest adventures. Also thanks from the yearbook for posting French trip pictures.
Did Sharon edit this for you? If not, congratulations it is very well written. The wording feels more like her than you. However if her style and word usage is rubbing off and this is all you than that's great.
It's actually all my own writing (with no editing even)...though I'm flattered that you thought it was Sharon. That is a compliment of the highest degree!
Sorry I forgot to put my name on my post. The one about writing was me.
